The best gifts for a track athlete are things they will use at practice every day or see before every workout: race-day gear that fits, a bag that keeps spikes and layers together, a training log, and wall art about the sport they live in. Below is a budget cheat sheet, then ideas by occasion (senior night, signing day, championship season, the holidays) and by event group.
We make running gear and running posters, so some ideas below are ours, with prices. Many are things we do not sell but athletes use. We say which is which.

What track athletes actually want (and what parents get wrong)
A few things hold for almost every athlete:
- Do not buy spikes as a surprise. Spikes are specific to the event (sprint, mid-distance, distance, jumps and throws shoes are built differently) and to the athlete's foot. A gift card to a running store, or a trip to try them on together, works better.
- Buy what they already wear, in the size they already wear. Athletes are picky about fit on race day. Check the tag on something they own and compare it with the size chart.
- Printed items are made for them. Our posters, graphic tees and hoodies are printed to order, so they cannot be returned for size or change of mind (we replace them free if they arrive damaged, misprinted or wrong). Running gear (half tights, split shorts, shirts, singlets) can be returned or exchanged within 30 days, unworn with tags. Details on the returns page.
Senior night gifts
Track senior night usually comes at the last home meet in spring. The best gifts connect to the athlete's four years: their event, their team, their best race.
- A poster for their wall. Pick a line they would actually say before a workout. Consistency is about stacking days, It Just Takes One is about the one race that changes a season, and Work Harder is the whole sport in two words. Prints are $30 to $45 by size, and buy 2, get 1 free makes a senior class gift cheaper for a team parent group.
- A framed collage of their bibs, meet photos and a results sheet from their best meet. It costs a frame and an afternoon, and it is the gift most seniors keep.
- A spike bag or duffel of their own, ideally with their name or number on it.
- Notes from teammates and coaches in a jar or a small book. Free, and often the thing they remember most.
Signing day and college commitment gifts
Many high schools hold signing day ceremonies for athletes who commit to run in college. The athlete is about to train at a higher volume and move into a small room, so pick gifts that fit both.
- Training gear for the first college season. MD Half Tights are $60 a pair or 3 pairs for $120, with ribbed fabric, an internal liner and a drawstring waistband. The RD Split Shorts have a 2.5 inch inseam, a built-in liner and two inner gel-sized pockets, at $60.
- A poster for the dorm wall. A 12x18 print suits a small room. Our poster size guide shows how each size looks on a wall.
- A training log. College training is a step up in volume. A paper log makes it easy to look back at what worked.
- A warm hoodie for early mornings. Our hoodies are $75, thick fleece, in a unisex loose fit.
Championship season gifts
Conference, state and national meets are where athletes want their kit dialed in. Good gifts here are practical and arrive before the meet, not after.
- Race-day shorts. The LD 4 inch Split Shorts ($45) have a side split, a built-in liner and two gel-sized pockets in the liner. The RD 2.5 inch is the shorter cut. Buy any 2 shorts and get the 3rd free.
- A warm-up layer. The NanoVent Performance Shirt ($35) is 75% nylon and 25% spandex, sweat-wicking with four-way stretch.
- Meet-bag refills. Spare spike pins and a wrench, safety pins, a towel and a second pair of socks. Cheap, and always missing at the worst moment.
- Recovery basics. A foam roller or massage ball for the days between rounds. Keep it simple. Anything medical is a question for their coach or athletic trainer.
Stocking stuffers and gifts under $25
- Stickers, $2.99 each, for a water bottle or a laptop. Stickers are final sale.
- Spike pins and a spike wrench. Every athlete loses them.
- A massage ball, small enough for a meet bag.
- A paper training log or a race-results notebook.
For something a little bigger, the under $50 collection has every poster and shirt in one place.
Gift ideas by event group
Sprinters and hurdlers. Short, light race shorts (the 2.5 inch RD or the half tights many sprinters prefer), a warm hoodie for long meet days, and a motivational print like Impossible.
Middle distance. The 800 and 1500 crowd lives on workouts. Read our piece on why the 800m is the hardest event, then pick from the track and field posters. Somebody May Beat Me carries Steve Prefontaine's best-known line.
Distance. Gear for high mileage (half tights and split shorts in the buy 2, get 1 free deal), a training log, and a print about the long game like Magnolia Dr, the altitude training road.
Jumpers and throwers. We do not make anything built for jumps or throws, so we will not pretend otherwise. Good picks: a big gear bag with room for shoes and implements, warm layers for long field event flights, a notebook for marks and approaches, and a gift card to the store where they buy their event shoes.
FAQ
What is a good gift for a track athlete under $50? A running poster (from $30), a performance shirt or tee ($35), or a pair of 4 inch split shorts ($45). Under $10, spike pins, a massage ball or stickers.
What do you give seniors on track senior night? Something tied to their four years: a framed collage of bibs and photos, a poster for their event or a line they love, a spike bag with their name, and notes from teammates.
Should I buy track spikes as a gift? Only with the athlete. Spikes are event specific and fit matters. A gift card or a shopping trip together is safer.
How long do Run Culture posters take to arrive? Posters are printed to order. See the shipping page for current print and transit times, and order early in December.
Can I return a printed gift? Posters, graphic tees and hoodies cannot be returned for size or change of mind, but we replace them free if they arrive damaged, misprinted or wrong. Running gear can be returned or exchanged within 30 days.
