The 2023 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational was more than just a race; it was a pulse-pounding showcase of collegiate cross country talent that left spectators breathless. Held on Friday, October 13, at the challenging Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin, this event lived up to its reputation as one of the most prestigious and electrifying cross country meets in the country.

Imagine a cross country course that throws everything at you – daunting hills, unpredictable terrain, and hairpin turns that can turn the tide of a race in an instant. It's on this battleground that the nation's top runners converge to prove their mettle. It's the place where legends are born, and where underdogs occasionally steal the show.

This year, the Nuttycombe Invitational played host to a staggering 23 ranked men's programs and 22 formidable women's teams, each vying for a place in the history books. The stakes were high, and the competition was fierce, drawing in the best collegiate talent from every corner of the United States.

The crowd roared as the Northern Arizona University (NAU) men's team claimed their seventh team title in eight years. This dynastic performance was nothing short of spectacular. Leading the charge was Nico Young, who raced his heart out to secure a second-place finish in the grueling 8-kilometer race with a time of 23:26.1. Hot on his heels was Drew Bosley, who powered through to eighth place with a time of 23:32.5.

But the NAU men's team wasn't the only story. Wisconsin's very own Jackson Sharp defied expectations, blazing his way to a remarkable fifth place finish in 23:26.4. And don't forget the young gun, Rocky Hanson, a Wake Forest freshman, who announced his arrival with a sensational sixth-place finish in 23:27.2.

NAU's triumph was awe-inspiring, and they now stand as the formidable favorites to claim the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November. The future is as bright as ever for these Lumberjacks.

On the women's side, history was made as the NAU women's team clinched their first team title in school history. Their astounding performance saw them amass a mere 52 points, a testament to their indomitable spirit and talent. The standout athlete of the day was Parker Valby, hailing from Florida, who left her competitors in the dust as she conquered the 6-kilometer race in a blazing time of 19:17.2. Right on her heels was Katelyn Tuohy from North Carolina State, claiming the second spot in 19:29.5. And it was a North Carolina State double, as Kelsey Chmiel secured third place with a time of 19:52.9.

With the NAU women's team taking the crown, the stage is set for a fierce showdown at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Their performance at the Nuttycombe Invitational was a declaration of intent, and they're poised to make a strong statement in November.
